Search Engine Optimization–SEO for short–is one of the most talked about business topics on the Internet. The term “SEO” gets over 100,000 related keyword searches per month on Google.

Wikipedia defines Search Engine Optimization as,

“the process of affecting visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s ‘natural’ or ‘un-paid’ (‘organic’) search results.”

What does that really mean?

In more basic terms, SEO helps improve how closely to the top of the list of search results your business shows up without paying for search ads. There are plenty of ways to better optimize your site for search engines (we’ll get into that later), but the gist of SEO is that you, or your business, will show up higher when people search for you if you do it properly.

Why should you care?

comScore reported there were 17.7 billion explicit core searches conducted in the U.S. during February 2014 alone. That’s over 200 billion search queries a year. So it’s a pretty safe bet that more than a few of those searches were people looking for products or services that are exactly what your business offers.

Bottom line: Few people get further than the first page in search results. If you’re not on the first page then you’re missing out on potential business.
